I had such a lovely weekend, which was mostly spent out in the winelands with family and friends.
On Saturday, Tom and I went to Stellies for a braai with Damian and Thomas, and some sneaky strawberry picking beforehand. We popped into Mooiberg, filled brightly coloured buckets with berries and then rewarded ourselves with a massive waffle and soft serve afterwards – an ideal reprieve from the heat. Following that, it was braai time, and we sat drinking strawberry G&Ts whilst playing Cards Against Humanity and listening to the cicadas frantically calling from the trees. The boys made a frangipani apricot tart for dessert, which was one of the best things I’ve ever eaten!
Sunday involved another road trip to Jo and James’ farm out in Paardeberg. It was such a special family gathering, and a wonderful afternoon filled with music, love, laughter, and exceptionally delicious food and wine. My family are ridiculously gifted musically (I missed those genes somehow), so we had a makeshift concert with people reading poems, singing and jamming together. I won the golf competition – just kidding – I missed the target and hit the cows instead, and Tom and I went for a little row around the dam, with Thomas pretending to be a viking and me relaxing in the sun and not contributing to the actual rowing effort at all.
After dropping Dave and Lau off in Hout Bay, we headed to the beach to get Mimmi to Go pizzas for supper. We went for a little seaside stroll while waiting for our takeaways, and I was in complete awe of the beauty surrounding us. The sky was a perfect honey gold, and the light reflected like stars from the luminescent sand. There were a group of nuns walking behind us, and one of them started running with her white veil flying out behind her – it was such a beautiful moment – she just looked so free and joyous. Tom found a cuttlefish shell, and I took endless photos of the sunset; it was the perfect finish to a wonderful weekend.
